Unattributed revenue
Updated 2026-11-02
Definition
Unattributed revenue is money you received that can't be tied to any tracked visit. The payment is real. There's just no matching visit to give credit to.
An honest attribution tool shows this as its own line. Quietly dropping it, or spreading it across other channels, makes reports look cleaner than they are.
Example
This example uses made-up numbers. Your Stripe account shows $50,000 for the quarter. Attribution reports:
| Channel | Revenue |
|---|---|
| Organic search | $21,000 |
| Paid search | $12,000 |
| $9,000 | |
| Unattributed | $8,000 |
So 16% of revenue has no visit behind it. You could look through those payments and find that $5,000 came from people who paid by invoice and used a different email from the one on their account.
Common causes
- The buyer never gave an email or ID that links their visits to their payment.
- They paid with a different email from the one they signed up with.
- Their last visit fell outside the attribution window.
- An ad blocker stopped the tracking script.
- The sale came before you installed tracking, such as in an imported history.
How to reduce it
Call identify on signup so each browser is linked to an email. Pass the Stripe customer ID if you have it. Route tracking through your own domain so fewer visits are lost. Lengthen the lookback window if your sales take longer than it allows.
How Headstream measures it
Headstream's ledger includes every Stripe payment. If a payment has no linked person, or no visit in the lookback window, Headstream credits it to an Unattributed line. That line keeps the credits equal to the ledger, so totals always match. Connecting Stripe is in beta. See connect Stripe for how payments are matched to people.
