Headstream

The best marketing attribution software in 2026

Updated 2026-11-02

The best marketing attribution software is the one that matches how you sell. A self-serve SaaS paying through Stripe needs something very different from a B2B team closing six-figure deals in a CRM.

We make Headstream, so we're biased. To keep this useful, we've said where other tools are the better pick. Competitor details come from each vendor's own website, checked on November 1, 2026. Prices and features change, so confirm them before you buy.

1. Headstream

Headstream is web analytics plus Stripe revenue attribution for SaaS. You add one script tag and connect Stripe with read-only access. Connecting Stripe is in beta. It imports your history, and charges, refunds and disputes go into an append-only ledger.

Attribution runs every hour across four models, with a 90-day default lookback you can adjust. A run publishes only if its credits equal the ledger. Refunds and disputes are credited back to the original sale. You can trace any payment to the visits it credited.

It also records self-reported answers from a heard_about form field and compares them with the first tracked visit. Funnels, heatmaps, session recordings and A/B tests are included. So are an MCP server, a REST API and a CLI.

Pick it if you bill through Stripe and want attribution you can check yourself.

Skip it if you need HubSpot or Salesforce data, ad spend import or company matching. Headstream doesn't have those. It also works only with Stripe for revenue today, and it's a new product.

2. Google Analytics 4

GA4 is free, and almost every marketer already knows it. It connects directly with Google Ads. Its attribution options are data-driven and last click. Google removed first click, linear, time decay and position-based models in November 2023.

Pick it if you run heavily on Google Ads and want a free default.

Skip it if you need to compare rule-based models side by side. We didn't find a Stripe integration on Google's pages, so plan on sending revenue yourself. See how we compare with Google Analytics.

3. Mixpanel

Mixpanel is a mature product analytics tool with deep funnels, retention and cohorts. It has the longest list of named models here: first touch, last touch, linear, participation, time decay, U-shaped, J-shaped, inverse J-shaped and custom. Attribution sits on the Growth and Enterprise plans.

For Stripe, its docs describe streaming webhooks through a cloud function or loading data from a warehouse. There's no native connector that we found.

Pick it if you have a product team and someone who can set up the data.

4. PostHog

PostHog bundles analytics, session replay, feature flags, experiments, surveys and a data warehouse. Its free tier covers 1M analytics events a month. Stripe revenue analytics is native. It confirms first-touch and last-touch modes, and its marketing analytics is in beta.

Pick it if engineers run your analytics and you want one broad platform. It goes much deeper on product work than a marketing attribution tool.

5. DataFast

DataFast is aimed at indie founders and small SaaS. It's quick to set up and supports Stripe natively, plus LemonSqueezy, Polar, Paddle, Shopify, WooCommerce and others. It also has an MCP server and a CLI.

Pick it if you don't bill through Stripe, or you want broad payment coverage. If you need several named models, check first. We didn't find any listed.

6. HockeyStack

HockeyStack is built for B2B revenue teams with long sales cycles. It joins CRM, ad and web data at the account level. Models include linear, first touch, last touch, position-based, time decay and a proprietary predictive model. You can set custom weights, and it also offers lift reporting. Pricing is custom, with no published plans.

Pick it if you have a sales team, a CRM and the budget for a sales-led purchase.

7. Dreamdata

Dreamdata focuses on B2B account-based attribution, with company identification and audience activation into ad platforms. It supports first touch, last touch, linear, U-shaped, W-shaped, data-driven and custom rule-based models. A free plan covers B2B web analytics. Attribution sits on a custom-priced plan, and pricing is based on monthly tracked users.

Pick it if you sell to accounts and care about LinkedIn and multi-person journeys.

What about simple analytics tools?

Fathom and Plausible are popular for clean website stats. They aren't full attribution tools. Plausible credits revenue to the visit in which the payment happens, and it doesn't track people across visits by design. For some buyers that's the reason to pick it. See our list of Google Analytics alternatives if plain stats are all you need.

How to choose

Answer these five questions and your list will shrink fast.

Where does your revenue live? If it's in Stripe, look for a direct connection. If it's in a CRM, look at the B2B platforms.

Who is buying? One person with a credit card suits visit-level attribution. Committees of buyers at one company need account-level tools.

How long is your sales cycle? Make sure the lookback window covers it.

Do you need ad spend data? If you want return on ad spend in one report, confirm that the tool imports it. Headstream doesn't.

Can you check the numbers? Ask how a vendor's attributed total ties back to billing. Ask whether you can export raw data and trace one sale.

Bottom line

For most self-serve SaaS on Stripe, start with something that connects directly to your billing and lets you compare models. For Google Ads-heavy teams, GA4 is hard to beat for free. For B2B teams with sales reps and a CRM, look at HockeyStack or Dreamdata.

Questions

What is the best marketing attribution software for startups?
If you bill through Stripe, choose a tool that connects to it directly and lets you compare models. Headstream and DataFast both target smaller SaaS teams. GA4 suits startups spending mainly on Google Ads.
Is Google Analytics a marketing attribution tool?
It includes attribution. GA4 offers data-driven and last-click models. Google removed first click, linear, time decay and position-based models in November 2023.
Does marketing attribution software need a CRM?
Only if your deals live there. Self-serve SaaS can attribute directly from billing data. Sales-led B2B teams usually need a tool that reads their CRM, which Headstream doesn't do today.
